Facebook Acquires Whatsapp for $19 Billion

Recent Media Buyouts

These past few weeks has been full of mergers and buy-outs. It all started with Google buying Nest, then Comcast buying Time Warner and finally Facebook acquiring WhatsApp. I am sure there were more companies that played a what would seem like game of Monopoly, but those three have been the talk online.Image

Brief Into: WhatsApp

If you are not familiar with WhatsApp, here is a brief introduction. WhatsApp is an app that connects people from all parts of the world together for free* (until near the end of 2013 they decide to charge .99 a year). WhatsApp can be downloaded to any smartphone platform. All you users would need would be a phone number. Through WhatsApp you are able to send and receive text message as well as voice messages as well. WhatsApp is similar to the Blackberry Messenger and Voxer combined.

Since, we have that out of the way let get down to business. Founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg signed a $19 Billion deal with Jan Koum and Brian Acton on Feb. 19th in front of a welfare building Koum visited often as a young adult (you can read his rags to riches story here). There are numerous articles on the internet that is speculating that Facebook paid too much for Whatsapp and that it was a huge gamble, but I am not a business analyst so I will not get into those details. However, I would like to go in to what this recent transaction can mean to social media and smartphones.

What does this all mean?

There is no surprise that Facebook tried to get into the smartphone business a few years ago and to their dismay it didn’t work out. Well Zuckerberg is definitely not a quitter. I believe this new addition will prepare Facebook to try the smartphone route again. However, not as an app, but as a UI (Android, iOS, Windows, etc…). WhatsApp can be that missing messaging feature that Facebook could use as their SMS system and potential call feature. The mobile & smartphone industry is worth an estimated $150.3 Billion. Not to mention how quickly consumers trade phones and how technology for these phones are rapidly improving.

The Famous Rumor Mill

On a different note, there are rumors circulating about Twitter partnering up with American Express to allow tweeters to use their hashtags as money (http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/11/tech/social-media/twitter-hashtag-purchases/). Which brings up another opportunity for Facebook to do the same with WhatsApp. BusinessInsider covered a story about a similar Chinese app called WeChat that so far allows their users to purchase food items from vending machines! You can read more here .

Tell me what you think this move means for Facebook and the future of Social Media in the comments below, Also, don’t forget to subscribe to my blog and other social media channels.

Blake Griffin Smacks Justin Bieber At Hollywood Starbucks

Blake Griffin should get more corporate endorsements for this!

Justin Bieber simply can’t seem to keep himself out of trouble.  Police were dispatched this morning to respond to an altercation at a Starbucks in West Hollywood involving some familiar faces.  A barista at the coffee house was apparently confronted by Bieber  when he refused to serve the pop star because he wasn’t wearing a shirt.  “He came in with no shirt on and his pants hanging down and underwear showing and tried to order a caramel apple machiatto.”, said Joey Goldsmith, the Starbucks barista, “I just told him he would have to put a shirt on if he wanted to order.”  That’s when Bieber snapped.  According to the police report Bieber started cussing at the barista and threatening to have his bodyguard, “kick his ass”.

Fortunately for Goldsmith, LA Clippers star Blake Griffin had been enjoying a drink at a table when he witnessed  the altercation and stepped in.  Witnesses…

Klout update and missed Perks

So, I have not been on here as much as I expected, but I am here now. I do not know if you’re a social media junkie or freebie junkie as much as I am, but I feel super passionate about Klouts unexpected update and their Perks tab.

If you don’t know what Klout is, in short it is a social media report card that keeps track the influence you have on others and people that influence you. Klout crawls through all your social media accounts (that is linked) looking for most shared or engaging posts, most topics shared and compares you to your friends on other Klout users. The awesome thing about Kout is that the higher you score the more “Perks” you are eligible to get. I will discuss Perks  later in this blog. The changes that Klout users are experiencing is a complete new and fresh layout with a graph on the top center of the page highlighting your 90 day low, one day change and 90 day high. Below you will find “Recent Activity” that calculates the responses you’ve accumulated over a certain tweet, post or image. Image The newer features are located on the left side of the page below your profile picture and Klout score; create, schedule and measure. Image Create allows you to create content, that is personalized and custom to you by the combination of your topics and influence and distribute them throughout your social media channels. Here you can edit your topics by adding or removing them. My topics are Rihanna, Social Media, Houston and Music. Which if you know me well describes me to the tee. The Schedule tab is a bit self-explanatory and can be useful. For instance, I saw an interesting series of articles that discussed Rihanna and Drakes “friendship” a few hours ago, now I only see articles about a band I have never heard of. If I wanted to share the Rihanna/Drake content later, scheduling it would have been valuable. Lastly, measure is an overall view of your Klout performance. Image Now, the absolute BEST feature and awesome marketing scheme-ever for social media geeks like me, Perks! As described earlier the higher your score the more Perks you qualify and often times better the Perks get. This allows business and brands that has a partnership with Klout, exclusively targets the most influential people on Klout to use and experience their product, while all the while bragging about the product to the Klout user’s fan base (or friends). I am not proud of my Klout score. I used to be a strong 60, but fell to 55. I also see one of the best Perks ever, two free tickets to see 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE!!! The BEST action/fantasy/historic/epic movie ever! So good that I named my new cat Leonidas. Leo for short. Image Unfortunately the Perk has expired and I don’t think I had that strong of enough Klout score to redeem it. *side note* wouldn’t it be awesome to not only get updates on your score, but also COOL Perks such as this one?

Well now that you have either been introduced to Klout or the new updates, take Klout for a spin. See if you can reach 70+ and watch how envious all your friends in your social circle will get with the cool Perks you’ll get along the way. Those envious friends, might even include me. If you have any cool Perks or know of any similar products, shoot me a comment down below. I would LOVE to learn about them!

So one of the GREAT features of Twitter is having some of your favorite celebrities in your digital backyard.

I am a Social Media Specialist at a digital marketing company and my duties include, well- Social Media. I was logged on to my Twitter account and caught a glimpse at my Twitter feed and noticed an interesting hastag; #McDillet. One can automatically assume that McDonald’s was rolling out another tasty treat to their menu for the summer, but upon further investigation it was actually the Instagram screen name for Dylan McDermott. If you’re not familiar with Dylan, shame on you! No seriously, not only is he a great actor, but he is also HOT! I remember watching him on The Practice when I was younger. He has been in two seasons of American Horror Story and was a cast member in the comedic movie, The Campaign. Needless to say I am a fan and every time I see him, I can’t help but to smile. Feel free to add him to your Twitter, Facebook and Instagram (go crazy!). You will find him as strikingly handsome and intelligent.

I’m still alive :)

Hey WordPress World! I know it has been a minute since I have posted anything on my blog. These things are not as easy as I thought they were. It takes alot to be dedicated and always post something on the daily/weekly bases.

Since my last post, I have been doing great. Last last Saturday was Rihanna’s concert in Houston. Me calling it a PHENOMENAL show would be a huge understatement. The highlight of the night to me was hear Rihanna actually say “HOUSTON”. I am not sure if you read my last few posts, but I got a chance to meet Rihanna in San Antonio. It was not the same because San Antonio is not home to me like Houston is. I also enjoyed her live performance of Man Down. Almost all of my friends are in love with that song, even there Rihanna haters. I think that song fits her voice so much that I can definitely see why several music critics are naming it the new Bob Marley’s I Shot the Sheriff. The only downfall from the event was her cover to “Darling Nikki”. I could not hear the words of the song or even the music. Perhaps other fans could that were familiar with the song, but it was very difficult for me. All in all I had a wonderful night and ended up spending it with my best friend over some great food.

Last Saturday I got through celebrating another really good friend of mine’s birthday. The stuff they say about Vegas is not always true. For any crazy, fun, energetic night it stays between the parties that were involved. However, I do have some picture to post.

Well I just wanted to let you all know that I have not abandonded my blog or fall ill of any super rare sickness. Everything is good with me. However, I would like to leave you with something to ponder:

The word “friend” is a word that gets more abused than “love”
